Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 12, 2026
StuffHappens ("the app," "we," "us") is built around one core principle: your memories belong to you. This policy explains, plainly, what data the app handles and what we do — and don't do — with it.
The short version
StuffHappens has no servers and no user accounts. Everything you capture — photos, voice notes, text, videos, scans, and locations — is stored locally on your device. We cannot see, access, or collect your memories. The only time any content leaves your device is when you actively use an optional AI feature, and that request goes directly to Anthropic (the AI provider) using an API key you provide yourself — never through us.
What's stored, and where
All memory content — photos, videos, audio recordings, scanned documents, text, tags, and location data you attach — is stored in the app's local storage on your device. None of it is uploaded to us, synced to a cloud service we operate, or accessible to us in any form.
If you use the optional Share Extension (sharing content into StuffHappens from Photos, Safari, or other apps), a small amount of data is passed through a secure, same-device-only App Group container — this never leaves your device either.
Your Anthropic API key, if you choose to add one, is stored in your device's Keychain — Apple's encrypted, secure credential storage. We never see or transmit this key anywhere except directly to Anthropic's API when you use an AI feature.
Optional AI features
StuffHappens includes two optional AI-powered features — the Recall chat assistant and AI-generated photo descriptions — both powered by Anthropic's Claude API, using your own API key that you obtain directly from Anthropic.
- Asking Recall a question sends relevant memory text (titles, notes, tags, dates) to Anthropic's API to generate a reply.
- Requesting an AI photo description sends that one photo to Anthropic's API to generate a caption.
- Both requests are authenticated with your own key and billed to your own Anthropic account.
This traffic is governed entirely by Anthropic's own privacy policy. We have no visibility into these requests and do not log, store, or have access to them in any way. If you don't add an API key, these features are simply unavailable — every other part of the app works fully offline.
Device permissions
StuffHappens requests the following permissions, used only for the stated purpose and only when you actively use the related feature:
- Camera — to capture photos and scan documents.
- Photo Library — to select and save photos.
- Microphone — to record voice notes.
- Speech Recognition — to transcribe voice notes on-device.
- Location — to tag photos and places, and to help you search for and drop pins on locations.
- Face ID — to protect access to your Private Vault.
None of these permissions are used for tracking, advertising, or any purpose beyond the feature you're actively using.
No tracking, no analytics, no ads
StuffHappens contains no analytics SDKs, no crash-reporting services, no advertising networks, and no third-party tracking of any kind. We do not know how you use the app, how often you open it, or anything else about your usage — because nothing is ever transmitted to us.
Data export and deletion
You can export your entire library at any time from Settings ▸ Data & Backup, and you can delete individual memories, or your entire library, directly within the app. Because everything is stored locally, uninstalling the app removes all app data from your device (unless you've saved a backup elsewhere).
Children's privacy
StuffHappens is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children, consistent with the fact that we do not collect information from any user at all.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Since the app has no accounts or contact channel to notify users directly, we encourage checking this page periodically.
